I like chemistry because it uses the logical part of my brain. I can work for hours trying to find the answer to a complex chemistry problem. You might be thinking that sounds like math. But it is more interesting than mathematics because then I can go to the chemistry lab and do experiments. It is exciting to see what happens when I do an experiment. On the other hand, I like art because I can be creative. I can express my feeling with a paintbrush. Both art and chemistry let me express different parts of myself. Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following talk. (M) My exams today were so difficult. I had three exams. In the morning, I had a French exam. French is really difficult for me, especially French spelling. I can never remember if I need an extra "e" at the end of words and that kind of thing. Then, after lunch I had a history exam. I couldn't remember any of the dates that I studied before the exam. History is the most difficult subject because I find it boring. Finally in the afternoon I had a math exam. It was difficult, but math is my favorite subject, so I think I did pretty well on the exam. I 'm good at math and I usually get high grades, so I 'm sure I ' ll get a good score. On our talk show today, we have three guests. First, this is Mr. Brian Hopkins from Chicago, Illinois. Next to him is Ms. Tina Martin from Madison, Wisconsin, and on her left we have Dr. James from Orlando, Florida. Welcome to all of you. Our topic for discussion today is the problem many homeowners have with their neighbors. Most of us don't even know our neighbors, but some families have difficult relationship with the people living next door. Loud parties, parking their cars in front of your house, their dogs making a mess in your yard. Why can't we all just get along? What are some things you can do to help deal with bad neighbors? Let's take a look. Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following review. (M) The Talk of the Town is a romantic comedy set in a small town in the south of France. This movie takes a typical love story and gives it a little bit of surprising twist that I think most viewers will really enjoy. In The Talk of the Town, rich businessman Timothy Green finds himself on vacation in a strange town of Moliere. Nothing here is quite what it seems. He constantly upsets the locals with his foolish mistakes and his inability to speak the French language. However, after meeting the mysterious and accident-prone Stephanie, played Nina Ricci, his trip begins to improve. Go to see this movie if you want a light-hearted diversion. It will certainly make you laugh, and I bet you won't believe the surprise ending. This movie is suitable for the whole family. II. ANSWER KEYS Part A: Listening Part 3 l . C 2. C 3. A 4. D 5. B 6. TRANSCRIPTS PART 3: Short Conversations Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following conversation. (M) Lisa, I heard that you got a new job. I didn't even know you were looking. Why did you change? (W) Well, I started to apply for jobs about a month ago. You know, the pay at my old job was too low, and the hours were so long. Now, I make more money, and my working hours are shorter. (M) That's great! Congratulations! Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following conversation. (M) Hey, Jean. Are you hungry? Let's have lunch together today. What do you feel like? I'll pay. (W) I'd like to but I can't Steve. I have a business meeting to go to. I have a very busy day today. (M) That's OK. Maybe some other time. Let me know when you have time. I know a lot of good restaurants around here. PART 4: Short talks Questions 1 through 3 refer to the following talk. (W) Most people think of the average .waking day as nine to five. In other words, most people are used to working during the day, usually from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. But some jobs start at different times. People work for "swing shift" job usually start work late in the afternoon, around 5:00 p.m. , and finish late at night, around 1:00 a.m. Other people work "graveyard" shift jobs. These shifts last all night, from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. These strange hours are necessary because some jobs can only be done at night. There are also an increasing number of people who work flexi-time. Flexi-time is convenient for worker because they can choose when to go to work. For example, even if my regular hours are from 9:00 to 5:00, I could go to work from 8:00 to 4:00 instead, if I wanted. Questions 4 through 6 refer to the following talk. (M) I changed jobs about 2 months ago. My new job is much better than my old job. First, the pay is much higher. Also, I work fewer hours. In my old job, I work ten hours a day, but in my new job, 1 only work six hours a day. I used to be exhausted all the time, but now I have lots of energy. My benefits are also better. I have medical and dental insurance, which I did not have at my old job. Finally, my new job is closer to my home. I can walk to work which saves me a lot of money each month of gasoline and parking fees. I can arrive home much earlier than before, so I also have enough time to take French classes twice a week, and I 'm going to join a gym next week. II. ANSWER KEYS Part A: Listening Part 3 L B 2.
